Haha Yoga sees the body as instrument to master the mind and enable us to attain higher states of consciousness .In sanskrit, the word Hatha is formed from two syllables Ha means the Sun aspect the denotes the active masculine principle. Tha means the Moon aspect that denotes the passive intutive feminine principle. Yoga comes from sanskrit word yuj which means ti yoke or to join.tn this context, the sustained practice of Hatha Yoga enables the harmonious joining of the sun ans moon aspects of our being. The practice is based on the ancient Indian scripture,Swatmarama’s Hata Yoga Pradipika which gives us clear guidelines on Asana(Postures) ,Pranayama(breathing technique) ,Bandhas,(Yogic locks) and Mudras (gesture using fingers).
Ashtanga Yoga means eight limbed yoga its based on Philosophy of Maharshi Patanjali. It is an ancient system that can lead to liberation and greater awarness of our spritual potential. The eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga can be described as eight disciplines. They are Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi.Of these third limb Asana(Postures) ,is the most important for us to practice, and through it we can understand other limbs.Though in appearance an external and physical discipline, throuh consistent effort we find many layers, more and more subtle, which need to be experienced directly and can lead to experience of the last four limbs.Yama(restraints) and Niyama(observances)should be observed at all times, otherwise yoga asana practice is reduced to a purely physcial pursuit.Pranayam(breath control) should be practiced after mastring asanas, when nervous system is strengthened and prepared. The last four limbs are Prathyara(withdrawl of senses) , Dharana (concentration) ,Dhyana(meditation) and Samadhi(union). These final four limbs are considered internal limbs meaning that they arise spontaneously as a result of practice of the first four and lead to spritula knowldge.
